TIPS and DISCLAIMERS
USING CHAPTER AND APPLICATION NOTES
It should be easy to review the Scriptural Journal’s collection of CHAPTERS and APPLICATION documents when knowing these few tips:
Passage comments are separated by the ** asterisk symbol
Passage comments often include summaries and/or insights of Scripture, and are displayed before relevant verses
Not all verses fully support a summary but may contribute or help lead to an idea
In other words, sometimes a Scriptural verse or passage may be listed under a comment that seems out of context and is not related to the comment. When you question the use of a verse or passage, ask whether there is an underlying truth in it that supports the comment.
Don’t be surprised to see a duplication of comments in different topics; Scriptural passages are often applicable (directly and indirectly) to various areas of our life!
Comments are placed in numeric order according to the first chapter verse listed under each comment
In other words, if you’re looking to see if there is a comment on Romans 1:10 then look for the first verse in Romans in a ** section ** after Romans 1:9 and before Romans 1:11
There may be numerous passages for the chapter under a comment, so the comment should be listed using the FIRST verse/reference to the chapter
Also, many application topics include a section entitled Consider. This section is Intended to provide an overall perspective or issue to keep in mind when reviewing comments in that document. For example, points to consider may include an overview of a ‘theological position’ or ‘trend in society’.
Admittedly, there is a lot of information in most documents so feel free to use the browser’s Find command to locate a comment that is relevant to what you’re looking for
The amount of information may seem overwhelming, but that's the point: God's Word affects every aspect of our lives in overwhelming ways!
Some comments are inspired or supported by others
It is understood there are scholars who spend a lifetime studying Scripture and related topics
This Journal is not intended to be an exhaustive collection of varying ideas but strives to highlight a prevalent view that can be interpreted from Scripture
Insights and initial ideas that come from over 400 different sources are typically summarized and referenced with the contributor’s reference number in <brackets>
Sometimes contributors add a single thought or idea, outline of argument, quote or Scriptural passage(s) to the conversation
SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN AND APPLY
As owner and editor of the Journal, I understand I am only scratching the surface when it comes to interpreting God’s Word.
Sometimes I ask “Who am I to venture to do such a thing as create a Scriptural commentary?” But then remember that my efforts are simply an ATTEMPT to dig a little into the vast amount of Scripture. Actually, the phrase “The more I know, the more I know I don’t know” applies here!
So please consider this site as my attempt to simply share my notes with you — notes I deem valuable to the discussion of passage or topic at hand while on my journey to understanding Scripture. The info contained here does not only include my thoughts over the past decades but those from a collection of over 400 contributors.
I see this Scriptural Journal as no different than taking notes on what I read in Scripture or glean from other sources, such as articles or videos, and sharing them with you. And it is my hope and prayer these notes will be a ‘launching pad’ of sorts as you delve deeper into God’s Word, knowing that Scriptural passages and their often indirect messages can inspire us in our walk with God!
YOU MAY NOT AGREE WITH EVERYTHING
This collection of notes primarily reference the NIV translation of the Bible since this modern version is known to be the closest to the original Greek, translating thought by thought instead of word by word. Regardless of preferred translation, I believe God can make sure His message is delivered to those who earnestly seek His truth.
The notes also offer a DISPENSATIONAL point of view that includes the literal interpretation of prophecy when possible. If you do not agree with this interpretation, I ask that you consider the comment-in-question as a springboard for further study.
The Journal finds value in the contributions of others as outlined in comment sections, but does not necessarily endorse ALL positions and comments from each Contributor. With that said, all comments should fall in line with the Biblical interpretation found in this Journal such as Pre-Trib and Dispensational views. The relevant question to ask: Does the Contributor have something to add to the conversation?
No doubt, there WILL be differences of opinion on matters throughout this Journal as there are throughout the Church. If you have a difference of opinion, I encourage you to evaluate the commentary against the selected Scriptural passages and consider how they apply to our lives — which is the overall purpose of this Journal!
It is imperative that we always seek God through PRAYER and TEST HIS WORD, not only rely on what other sources have to say.
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
(Psalm 119:18 NIV)
